The battle for the Caucasus lasted 442 days. They went down in history as the longest defensive and offensive operations conducted in difficult mountainous conditions. Defense period lasted from July to December 1942, the offensive – from January to October 1943. On the territory of Karachay-Cherkessia there were guerrilla squads. The main task of the partisans was to cut off the Nazi supply of parts fighting, from their supply bases. According to the headquarters of the guerrilla movement, the partisans held from August 1942 36 fights, destroying 1700 enemy soldiers. The exploits of the defenders of the Caucasus were highly appreciated by the Soviet people and government. January 25, 1943 was established the medal "For defense of Caucasus", which was awarded by many participants in the battle for the Caucasus and workers in the rear. The peoples of the North Caucasus and Transcaucasia, always keep the memory of their great work and dear to the victim.
