At the zonal meeting on the issue of growing open-cut vegetables in the Stavropol Territory

The Associate Professor of the Department of Production and Processing of Food Products from plant raw materials of the Faculty of Agro Biology and Land Resources, PhD in Agricultural Sciences M.V. Selivanova made a presentation at a meeting in the Neftekumsk district.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Stavropol Territory Andrey Oleinikov, Head of the Department of Melioration and Vegetable Growing Alexander Naidenov, employees of the Stavropol State Agrarian University Maria Selivanova and Yury Proskurnikov, Deputy Director of the FSBSI FSCV Sergey Sirota, manager of the “Agrosemtsentr” company took part in the event held on February 9, specialists of the State Institution “Stavropol Agricultural Information and Consulting Centre”, representatives of district administrations, commercial organizations scientific workers, heads of district associations of peasant farms and vegetable farms.
During the meeting, issues of state support for open vegetable growing, selection and seed-growing conditions, training of specialists for the vegetable-growing industry were considered.
In his welcome speech, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Stavropol Territory, Andrey Oleinikov, noted the importance of the event and wished the colleagues productive communication: “The production of open ground vegetables is of great importance not only to provide the residents of Stavropol with this product, but also for the food security of the country as a whole”.
Head of the Department of Melioration and Vegetable Production Alexey Naidenov reported on measures of state support to open vegetable cultivation in 4 directions: unrelated support, construction of agro-industrial complex objects, purchase of elite seeds and reclamation, the volume of financing for which in 2018 was increased more than 2 times and amounted to 135 million roubles.
On the current state of selection and seed production of vegetable crops and the market of vegetable seeds in Russia, Deputy Director of the Federal Research Centre for Vegetable Growing, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences Sergey Sirota, reported. Annually, on the basis of an experimental farm, 3 to 5 tons of seeds of vegetable, flower crops of higher reproductions are produced. The cultivation of commercial seeds of vegetable crops with seed farms consists of 40 to 50 contracts for breeding services.
The role of Stavropol State Agrarian University in the development of vegetable growing was told by Maria Selivanova, Associate Professor of the department of production and processing of food products from plant raw materials at the Faculty of Agro Biology and Land Resources, PhD in Agricultural Sciences. She explained that vegetable growing in the Agro University is engaged in two divisions: a greenhouse and a greenhouse complex and an experimental station. The hothouse-greenhouse complex is located in the city of Stavropol; it includes winter and spring greenhouses and a site of open ground. Here grow a large set of vegetable crops: cucumber and tomato - in a sheltered soil; tomato, table beet, radish, white cabbage, eggplant, pepper - in the open. Experimental plant grows potatoes, table beet, nightshade crops; in the greenhouse of the experimental station at the request of enterprises using modern technologies - seedlings of vegetable and flower crops.
The main direction of the work of vegetable units is educational activity. Annually the University carries out training of specialists in the field of “Fruit and vegetable growing” - 20 people who are employed in fruit and vegetable farms. In the vegetable centres of the university students of the faculties of agro biology and land resources and ecology and landscape architecture undergo training and production practices. The subdivisions are the basis for seminars, refresher courses for training and retraining of experts in the field of vegetable growing in the open and protected soil of the regions of the North Caucasus Federal District and the Southern Federal District - more than 15 events take place annually. Advanced courses are held at the request of employers and individuals.
An important direction in the work of vegetable growing centres is research and development. The subject of scientific research covers a wide range of areas. The laboratory provides consulting services. The results of departmental studies are used to prepare articles, perform diploma and dissertational works, as well as implement grant projects. In conclusion of her speech, Maria Selivanova expressed readiness of the university staff to cooperate in the field of vegetable growing.
