To the memory of the great scientist

11.01.2019

On January 11, 2019, we - the staff of Stavropol State Agrarian University - suffered a heavy loss. At the age of 81, the professor of Department of Private Animal Science, Animal Breeding and Breeding, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor, Hero of Socialist Labor, Laureate of the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the Field of Science and Technology, Honored Zootechnician of the RSFSR, Honorary Citizen of the Stavropol Territory and Apanasenkovsky District Vasily Andreyevich Moroz left us.

He lived the life of a conscientious and honest man, a talented specialist of the highest level and a recognized scientist in the field of sheep and goat production, a beloved teacher and a respected citizen of his country.

The biography of Vasily Andreevich began as the story of the most ordinary boy. He was born in the city of Kizlyar of the Republic of Dagestan on October 12, 1937 in a simple hard-working family. His childhood was during the tragic war and the difficult post-war years, which formed his resilience, responsibility and vitality.

n July 1943, having survived the death of his father at the front and the death of his brother and sister from starvation and disease, he and his mother came on foot from Dagestan to the village of Kievka, Apanasenky district, where he went further into the professional and scientific development of Vasily Andreevich as a sheep breeder.

After seven classes of elementary school, he entered the Terek Agricultural Engineering College in the city of Prokhladny. With honors diploma of zootechnology he arrived in Stavropol. He also graduated from the Institute with honors. And on summer practice he several times came to the village Kievka. It was easy to study to a future scientist, but financially it was very difficult, so he worked as a loader at night, built kosaras on holidays, sawed woods, and went to field works.

He began his great professional career as the chief zootechnician of the Lenin collective farm, and the following 27 years in this position, Vasily Moroz were perhaps the most fruitful in his life. The collective farm became a breeding plant of all-Union importance, became one of the best farms in the Stavropol region with 70 thousand sheep. The chief livestock specialist Moroz graduated from graduate school , defended his thesis in 1969, and in 1987 became the first doctor of agricultural sciences in the country who defended his dissertation on sheep breeding.

From the collective farm named after Lenin, Vasily Andreyevich came to head the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Sheep and Goat Breeding, which was located in Stavropol. But even after that, he did not lose contact with his family farm. It was on the collective farm in 1993 under the leadership of Vasily Moroz that a new breed of fine-fleeced sheep, the Manych merino, was bred.

With participation of Vasily Andreevich in our country, five new breeds of sheep were developed in the Stavropol and Altai Territories and the Aginsk Buryat District. He published more than 400 scientific papers, including two textbooks for universities. Under his leadership, 32 theses were defended, including nine doctoral. He was awarded four orders, 22 medals and 16 insignia. June 22, 1983 Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR awarded the title Hero of Socialist Labor. His students now work in the Stavropol and Altai Territories, in Buryatia, Kalmykia, the Saratov Region, as well as in Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, and Georgia.

He traveled to more than 30 countries, became well-known among the best breeders-boniters in Australia, Uruguay, Argentina. His bright, filled with important scientific developments and talented management activities at the head of the All-Russian Research Institute of Sheep and Goat breeding proved that our domestic sheep can be no worse, but better than in the world centers of this industry.

And it is possible to list the achievements of this truly great scientist and remarkable person for a long time.

But today we all mourn and with pain in our hearts we remember wonderful and good deeds of a person who was greatly appreciated and deeply respected in our university and scientific community. Our meetings and events will be poorer without his wise advice, sparkling humor, endless energy. His qualities such as activity, cheerfulness, dedication and integrity were an example for us. He will remain in our hearts a reliable and attentive friend, always ready to help in any situation.

In loving memory.
