Activists of the volunteer unit “Dobrovolec” of the Stavropol State Agrarian University produced the first tactile books for blind and visually impaired children as part of the grant project winning the Mashuk-2018 Forum competition. The project “What do clouds look like?” was developed and implemented by Inna Kulieva, the head of the volunteer squad of the university.
The project organizers are volunteers from the “Dobrovolec” squad who have undergone preliminary training and are familiar with the intricacies of creating books for blind and visually impaired children and the rules for their production.
A tactile book is a book with applications and fabric elements that are as close as possible to the original of the depicted object. An important feature of such books is that they contain almost no text, they only have three-dimensional figures, silhouettes, thanks to which blind and visually impaired children discover the world around them.
The primary task of the volunteers is to make books qualitatively, with maximum accuracy, by transferring the shape and density of the surface of the depicted object.
Before the project was launched, several meetings of its organizers with the staff of the Stavropol Regional Library for the Blind and Visually Impaired were held. V. Mayakovsky, where, in addition to discussing the creation of tactile books, the themes and content of the books planned for production were agreed upon.
At the first lesson, volunteers produced several tactile books on the subject of “Geometric Figures”.
The creation of books will take place in stages. Books of each type will be made in 4-5 copies and transferred to the Stavropol Regional Library for the blind and visually impaired. V. Mayakovski, Stavropol and its two branches in the Stavropol Territory.
The next book making lesson will be held with pupils of the “Rosinka” orphanage for children.
