“The Maslenitsa is coming - damn honey carries!” - all the faculties of the Stavropol State Agrarian University widely and vividly noted the meeting of spring! Students traditionally tried their strength, took part in competitions, and, of course, surprised everyone with the number of pancakes.
The rector of Stavropol State Agrarian University, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Vladimir Trukhachev addressed the audience with a welcoming speech. He noted that the tradition to celebrate Shrovetide lives on such a large scale in the Stavropol State Agrarian University for 20 years.
For 2 decades, several generations of students have changed, but joy, enthusiasm and fun always unite all the faculties at the festivities in honor of the beginning of spring.
The symbol and the main dish of the holiday are pancakes - golden, round, hot, symbolizing the sun, which are especially tasty at Shrovetide. The students presented to the jury a delicacy with different fillings, and an original presentation.
The main intrigue of the holiday was the competition for the highest pile of pancakes. The jury, together with the rector of the Stavropol State Agrarian University, Vladimir Ivanovich Trukhachev, appreciated all the presentations of Maslenitsa festival. Beating the record last year, the first place was taken by the team of students from the Faculty of Agrobiology and Land Resources and the Faculty of Ecology and Landscape Architecture. Their treat reached a height of 283 centimeters.
Creative groups performed for the guests of the festival: the ensemble of the Cossack song “Lel”, the ensembles “Slavnitsa” and “Eh, expanse”.
The guys frolicked in competitions and dances, sang and joked. Two teams appeared to be the strongest in dragging the rope: the team of the Faculty of Agrobiology and Land Resources and the Faculty of Ecology and Landscape Architecture, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
The winners were awarded with memorable cups by the vice-rector for academic affairs, Professor Ivan Vyacheslavovich Atanov.
The holiday ended with a celebration of the champions, and, of course, a treat for pancakes!
In Russia, demonstrative Shrovetide celebrations began to be organized from the 18th century, and even Russian tsars treated the holiday with increased attention. Catherine II, who, because of her origin (she was from one of the German principalities), did not know the roots of Russian folk traditions and introduced masquerade carnival processions with elements of kitsch and theatrical parody made her contribution to the celebration of Maslenitsa. It is interesting that just then pancakes, personifying the sun, became the symbol of the holiday. As a result, by the 20th century, the tradition of meeting spring, nationwide festivities, jubilation and feasts in the days of the Pancake Week was firmly established in Russia.
