Dialogue with a scientist

16.02.2021

Stavropol State Agrarian University today has 10 Faculties, 126 areas of training, 18.5 thousand students and trainees, 1100 lectures and staff members, 163 thousand square meters of educational space, 9 422 hectares of fields and greenhouses on a training and experimental farm. About people for whom the Agrarian University, but also the scientific base will be discussed in our new column “Dialogue with a scientist”.

Alena Yurievna Ozheredova

Senior Lecturer at the Department of Agro chemistry and Plant Physiology of the Faculty of Agrobiology and Land Resources.

Study Area: Establishing the pattern of changes in the agrochemical properties of chernozemic soils, improving fertilization systems, developing theoretical and practical aspects of predicting the yield of agricultural crops based on the calculated method for determining the doses of mineral fertilizers.

- Tell us a little about yourself. How did you come to science, what prompted you to stay in university / science after graduation?

I was born in 1992 in the village of Krasny Manych of the Turkmen region of the Stavropol Territory. In 2010, I graduated with a silver medal from the secondary school №13 in the village of Krasny Manych and entered the FSBEI HPE “Stavropol State Agrarian University”, graduating with honors from the University with a degree in Agronomy in 2015 entered the full-time postgraduate study in the direction of study 06/35/01 - Agriculture, specialty - 06.01.04 - Agro chemistry.

When submitting documents in 2010 to the University, I dreamed of going on a budget and studying at the Faculty of Economics, where the number of places was limited, but additionally, on the recommendation of my uncle, who graduated from the Faculty of Agricultural Mechanization, I applied to the Faculty of Agronomy for the specialty Agronomy. I didn’t get to the budget at the Faculty of Economics, and then the dean of the Faculty of Agronomy (which is now called the Faculty of Agrobiology and Land Resources), Alexander Nikolaevich Esaulko, offered to enroll in the specialty Agronomy. From that moment my scientific path began. But I nevertheless realized my dream, in my second year I entered the Institute of Additional Professional Education in the direction of training 03/03/01 Economics and successfully graduated from it in 2016.

After receiving higher education, I remained at the University, as I saw further prospects for my personal and career development.

- What scientific developments were the first?

I got a good scientific advisor, my mentor - Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Nikolaevich Esaulko, who helped to determine the direction of scientific research in the first year. Together, we laid down experiments to study the agrochemical principles of programming winter wheat.

After three years of research, the information received was processed and the first work was written for the All-Russian scientific competition for the best scientific work among the universities of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, where it was possible to win in the category “Agro chemistry and Agro soil Science”. And then there were many more victories in various competitions and grants. But that’s how it all started.

- What are you doing today? What kind of work and in what direction are you doing? What progress have you made in studying your topic?

I am engaged in teaching, I teach disciplines: Agro chemistry, Agrochemical Survey and Monitoring of Soil Fertility, Basics of crop yields programming, Fruit and Berry crops and grapes yields programming in the areas of training: 35.03.04 – “Agronomy”, 21.03.02 – “Land management and cadasters”, 19.03.02 – “Food from vegetable raw materials”.

From the moment I entered graduate school, I began to conduct research to determine the doses of mineral fertilizers to achieve the planned yield of winter wheat varieties on leached chernozem of the Stavropol Upland. Based on the results of research, in 2020 I defended the thesis for the degree of Candidate of Agricultural Sciences.

- How can people benefit from your research?

The research results allow agricultural holdings, agricultural enterprises, peasant farms to obtain higher yields of all agricultural crops.

- If there was an opportunity to ask any scientist of any era one question, who would this scientist be and what would you ask?

The scientist is Markel Stepanovich Savitsky. And the question: How long did it take to draw up a structural formula for calculating crop yields?

- What scientific discovery are you looking forward to the most? Maybe a cure for cancer, or the invention of the philosopher’s stone?

I am looking forward to the result of the astrophysicist from the University of Connecticut (USA) Ron Mallett, who wrote the equation, which for the first time can serve as the basis for creating a real time machine, taking into account all the laws of physics known to date.
