"Maslenitsa is coming!" - all faculties of Stavropol State Agrarian University widely and vividly celebrated the meeting of spring! Traditionally, students measured their strength, took part in competitions, and, of course, surprised everyone with the number of pancakes.
Rector of Stavropol State Agrarian University, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor - Vladimir Ivanovich Trukhachev addressed the audience with a welcoming speech. He noted that the tradition of celebrating Maslenitsa on such a large scale has been living in Stavropol SAU for 20 years.
For 2 decades, several generations of students have changed, but joy, enthusiasm and fun invariably unite all faculties at the festivities in honor of the beginning of spring.
The symbol and the main dish of the holiday are pancakes - golden, round, hot, symbolizing the sun, which are especially tasty on Maslenitsa. Students presented a delicacy with different fillings and original presentation to the jury.
The main intrigue of the holiday was the competition for the highest pile of pancakes. The jury, together with the rector of Stavropol State Agrarian University, Vladimir Ivanovich Trukhachev, evaluated all the presentations of Maslenitsa. Breaking last year’s record, the first place was taken by a team of students from the Faculty of Agrobiology and Land Resources and the Faculty of Ecology and Landscape Architecture. Their food has reached a height of 283 centimeters.
Creative groups performed before the guests of the holiday: the ensemble of the Cossack song "Lel", the ensembles "Slavnitsa".
The guys frolicked in competitions and dances, sang and joked. In the tug of war, two teams turned out to be the strongest at once: the team of the Faculty of Agrobiology and Land Resources and the Faculty of Ecology and Landscape Architecture, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
The winners were awarded with commemorative cups by the Vice-Rector for Academic and Educational Work, Professor Ivan Vyacheslavovich Atanov.
The holiday ended with the celebration of the champions, and, of course, with the pancakes!
In Russia, demonstrative Maslenitsa festivities began to be organized from the 18th century, and even Russian tsars treated the holiday with increased attention. Catherine II made her contribution to the Maslenitsa, who, due to her origin, did not know the roots of Russian folk traditions and introduced masquerade carnival processions with elements of kitsch and theatrical parody into everyday life. It is interesting that it was then that pancakes, personifying the sun, became the symbol of the holiday. As a result, by the 20th century, the tradition of welcoming spring, national festivities, jubilation and feasts during the Maslenitsa week had become firmly established in Russia.
