On the basis of implementation of the state contract with the Ministry of Agriculture of Stavropol Territory "Development of a regional model of organic livestock and poultry production for the production of raw materials and creation of food with specified quality parameters" Stavropol State Agrarian University is an observer partner of the "National Organic Union" of the Russian Federation (NOU). On the recommendation of the NSO, a "Centre for Organising and Supporting Organic Poultry Production in Southern Russia" has been established.
During 2018-2022, more than 130 digests on organic farming in the world and Russia were received from NSO. Representatives of the university regularly participate in international and regional profile events.
Professor Elena Edugartovna Epimakhova participated in the FAO virtual workshop. A total of 93 participants were registered, including 8 from Russia. The seminar dealt with current issues of legal and regulatory framework and marketing of organic agriculture in the world.
According to NOS, the Russian Federation ranks 22nd in the world in terms of organic market volume and 38th in terms of per capita consumption of organic products. Domestically, 25% of the organic market is domestic. There are 105 specialized agricultural producers operating in the country in accordance with Russian and international standards, of which 53% produce crops and 24% - livestock.
Among the factors restraining the formation of a sustainable demand for organic products among the population are a low level of awareness, the presence of pseudo-labelling and high added value.
