StSAU Scientific Regiment

Stavropol State Agrarian University has joined the all-Russian campaign "Scientific regiment", which is held by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

"Scientific Regiment" is a series of publications about students and teachers, about scientists who during the Great Patriotic War brought the victory closer by their military and labor exploits.

The main aim of the project is patriotic education of young people and preserving the memory of the Great Victory. Thousands of students, teachers, workers and employees of institutes volunteered to go to the front. The memory of them should live!

Alexander Nikolaevich Smirnov, Doctor of Veterinary Science, professor, honored scientist of the RSFSR, was born on August 9, 1906 in Simbirsk (Ulyanovsk). In 1925 he graduated from high school № 3 in Ulyanovsk. Ulyanovsk and entered the Kazan Veterinary Institute, which successfully graduated in 1929. After graduation he worked in the Orenburg region as a member of the veterinary epizootic team for the liquidation of mass pneumonia in cattle. Then he was drafted into the Red Army, but was soon discharged for health reasons. Since October, 1930 he began his scientific activity, first at the Kazan State Veterinary Institute and then at Sverdlovsk Research Institute of Veterinary Medicine. In 1935 he defended his thesis for a candidate degree in Kazan State Veterinary Institute on swine fever, and in 1943 his doctoral thesis on "Pathological anatomy, histology and pathogenesis of bovine paratuberculosis", while working as an assistant professor in Chkalov Institute of Agriculture. This work had not only theoretical but also great practical importance, because it contributed to the elimination of the disease widespread in the USSR and causing great damage to cattle breeding. 


Since 1944, A. Smirnov was invited to work as a Head of Pathological Anatomy Department at Stavropol Agricultural Institute, where he was simultaneously appointed Dean of the Veterinary Faculty, which he headed for 24 years.

During the war Alexander Nikolayevich combined difficult administrative work as the dean of the faculty and head of the department with scientific activity, studying pathological anatomical changes in especially dangerous animal diseases: paratuberculosis, brucellosis, malignant catarrhal fever, foot and mouth disease of ruminants, emphysematous carbuncle and horse epizootic lymphangitis. For his services to his country A. N. Smirnov was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the Badge of Honor, as well as several medals: "For Valor" and "For Valorous Labor in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945".

In 1969 by the decision of Scientific Council of Stavropol Agricultural Institute the name of honored worker of sciences of RSFSR, professor Alexander Nikolaevich Smirnov was given to the department of pathanatomy.
