Students of Stavropol State Agrarian University in their fourth year of zootechnics visited the All-Russian Research Institute for Animal Breeding experimental station in the village of Tsimlyansky, Shpakovsky district, last week. The students were given lectures on imported beef sheep breeds and modern methods of efficient flock reproduction.
St. Petersburg State Agrarian University and the All-Russian Research Institute for Animal Breeding are long-standing partners. The university's basic department of private zootechnics, animal breeding and selection was established through cooperation with the federal state budgetary scientific institution, the North Caucasus Federal Research Agrarian Centre.
Now, the All-Russian Research Institute for Animal Breeding experimental station has 10 breeds of sheep. These are mainly meat breeds imported from abroad. Students of SSAU were introduced to the most widespread assisted reproductive technologies used in modern enterprises. Such as artificial insemination, cryopreservation of sperm and creation of storages, induction, and synchronisation of ovulation, etc. The children got a clear idea of the biological and economic value of each method and the prospects for their further application.
- Such visits to working farms, where not only animals are reared, but also where research is carried out, are a very important element of the educational process. It is a pittance for graduates who have mastered the theory perfectly, but do not know from which side to approach a cow or sheep.
