A veterinary drug for the treatment of skin diseases in cats was developed in Stavropol State Agrarian University

12.12.2022

SSAU veterinary scientists have developed a domestic veterinary drug for cats that will help fight various types of dermatitis in pets. According to preliminary estimates, it is not difficult to manufacture and should be affordable. A group of university scientists received a patent for the drug. There are currently no analogues on the market.

The main purpose of the product developed by Stavropol veterinarians is the treatment of allergic dermatitis and viral dermatosis in cats. It contains colloidal silver, zinc oxide, glycerin, methylcellulose, lanthanum amino acid salt and distilled water. The implementation of the invention allows to reduce the time and increase the effectiveness of the treatment of allergic dermatitis and viral dermatosis in cats.

Pharmacological, toxic, pharmaceutical properties and safety of the developed drug were studied on the basis of the laboratory of preclinical studies, which was created at SSAU as part of the Priority 2030 program.

As a prototype, Stavropol scientists studied one of the well-known drugs on the market for the treatment of skin dermatitis in humans. The development of university scientists shows greater efficiency due to the inclusion of colloidal silver and zinc oxide, which have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, drying, adsorbing, astringent and antiseptic effects.

“The drug has already been used on 9 cats of the university veterinary clinic. Six had flea allergy dermatitis and three had atopic skin syndrome. No adverse effects, including neurological effects such as depression, unsteady gait, or seizures, have been reported in animals after administration. In the near future, we will continue testing,” said the dean of biotechnological and veterinary medicine Valentin Skripkin, who noted the good results of testing the drug.

“According to preliminary estimates, the approximate development of our preparation (VetLan) will be approximately 280 rubles per 30 grams, which is almost 50% lower compared to two-component preparations. The difference in price is achieved due to the absence of antibacterial and hormonal components in the composition, which avoids cases of the development of a stable bacterial infection and skin atrophy in animals with prolonged and thoughtless use by the owners. Since the development can be considered successful, we are going to adapt it for dogs and thereby expand the capabilities of the drug, “ Vladimir Sitnikov, Acting Rector of SSAU, commented on the prospects for introducing the drug into production.
