SSAU students were trained to operate agricultural drones

10.02.2023

Stavropol State Agrarian University hosted the first Aviatech unmanned aerial vehicle control university championship.

Teams from all faculties of the university took part in the championship. The task of the students was to learn how to control unmanned aerial vehicles and fly around eight stations as quickly as possible.

- Today, the control of unmanned aerial vehicles is very important. This direction is closely connected with our farmers, their activities in the field of agriculture and fertilization. Today the students have taken the first step towards understanding the control of unmanned aerial vehicles. Such events will continue to be held so that students can acquire the necessary skills that will be useful to them in their professional activities,” said Associate Professor of the Department of Information Systems, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Dmitry Shlaev.

All participants in the competition learned how to fly drones, but some of them proved to be better than others. The first place was taken by the team of the Faculty of Electrical Power Engineering, the second - by Engineering and Technology, and the third place was won by students of the Faculty of Secondary Vocational Education.

“Today, unmanned aerial vehicles are a part of our life, both in the military and rescue, and in the agricultural sector. They make it easier to scan fields, find weeds. There are even devices and programs that help to understand which plants are withered or sick. Until today, I have never picked up a drone remote control, although I always wanted to try, but there was no way. I realized that it is not as easy as I thought. It is necessary to simultaneously observe the drone and look into the camera, intuitively understand its movements. But the use of drones is really convenient for a person, wherever he uses it, - shared a member of the team of the Accounting and Finance Faculty Nikita Strelkov.

Now SSAU scientists, among other things, are opening a new training and technical center "Unmanned aircraft in the agro-industrial complex" within the framework of the "Priority-2030" program. The head of the region, Vladimir Vladimirov, got acquainted with the progress of the project. It is also planned to launch a master's program "UAV Control Systems" at the university. Vladimir Sitnikov, Acting Rector of Stavropol Agrarian University, spoke in more detail about it:

- This autumn, the master's program "UAV Control Systems" will be launched, within the framework of the "Agroengineering" direction. Specialists will master the technology of using intelligent information-measuring and control systems. This significantly modernizes such types of work as topographic survey, control of germination and yield, detailed analysis of the terrain at any time of the day, three-dimensional surface scanning and others,” he said.
