SSAU scientists have created a harmless drug to protect against argasid mites

15.02.2023

The tool developed by the researchers allows you to effectively protect farm animals from argasid mites of the Argasidae family. On the territory of the Russian Federation, these arthropods live mainly in the southern regions. Including - common in the Stavropol Territory.

As the main habitats, argasid mites choose shelters of a closed type. Often these are agricultural buildings: barns, stables, cowsheds, poultry houses. Argasid mites can be carriers of many infectious diseases, in particular, tick-borne relapsing fever, Lyme disease and hemorrhagic fever. Their saliva is especially dangerous for livestock and poultry: mites’ bites cause fever, itching and often lead to death. Also among the negative consequences of the bite is a multiple decrease in the productivity of animals.

- Mites attack on poultry and livestock are one of the most acute problems for the agricultural sector of the region and the country. Every year, only in private farms in the Stavropol Territory, mites bite about 70% of the livestock, and this is more than 20% of our poultry and more than 40% of our sheep. Taking into account the strategic objectives of increasing the livestock of farm animals and its productive characteristics, today it is important for us to minimize such risks,” commented one of the authors of the project, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Parasitology and Veterinary Sanitary Expertise, Anatomy and Pathology named after Professor S.N. Nikolsky, Candidate of Veterinary Sciences Dmitry Chervyakov .

The prophylactic drug created by the scientists of Stavropol State Agrarian University makes it possible to prevent the attack of mites by spraying the mixture in places of their potential accumulation. The tool has increased effectiveness against the family Argasidae. At the same time, unlike many analogues, it is absolutely harmless to animals, and does not cause allergic reactions upon contact with the skin. To achieve this effect, scientists used safe components in the composition that do not put a load on the immune apparatus of animals.

Researchers of Stavropol State Agrarian University have already received a patent for the invention. Currently, the tool is being tested in the households of the Blagodarnensky district of the Stavropol Territory.
