Stavropol Agrarian University is a big friendly family: an interview with teacher Yulia Mikhailovna Sklyarova

02.03.2023

Continuing the series of interviews with the teachers of the Stavropol State Agrarian University, we talked to the head of the Department of Financial Management and Banking, Doctor of Economics, Professor Yulia Mikhailovna Sklyarova.

Yulia Mikhailovna is a hereditary teacher, the author of more than 400 publications of scientific, educational and methodical works and monographs, the owner of the title "Miss SSAU" and a leading scientist of the Stavropol State Agrarian University.

Yulia Sklyarova has a long list of professional achievements. Among them are the Medal and the title "Honorary Worker of the Agro-Industrial Complex of Russia", the badge "The Best Worker of Finance".

In addition, she is a laureate of the “Gold Medal “European Quality – 100 Best Universities of Russia” competition in the nomination “TEACHER OF THE YEAR”; Laureate of the Russian National Prize named after Pyotr Stolypin "Agrarian Elite of Russia"; Laureate of the competition for the best scientific work of the Free Economic Society. He has the title of academician of the International Public Organization "International Academy of Agrarian Education" (IAAO). And for labor merits, achievements in various fields of activity aimed at the socio-economic development of the region, she was awarded the Prize of the Government of the Stavropol Territory and the Gratitude of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation.

Yulia Mikhailovna, tell us, how many years have you been teaching?

– Since 2002, my teaching career began: assistant, teacher, associate professor, professor, and gradually reached the position of head of the department. The career of a teacher has always been very close to me, because my grandmother is a teacher of Russian language and literature, my father, Professor Mikhail Alekseevich Voronin, also works at SSAU. The total experience of our teaching dynasty is 97 years.

What university did you graduate from?

– I am a graduate of the Stavropol State Agrarian University. When I, like the current school graduates, thought about where to enter, there was no doubt: back in 1996, I chose the direction of accounting at our agricultural university. And to those schoolchildren who ask for our advice, my colleagues and I always say that the growth trajectory, our educational track, must be built with SSAU. To do this, we conduct classes in scientific circles, in specialized classes, participate in the project of early professional orientation of the student "Ticket to the Future" to form interest in the future profession.

Today, a student has the opportunity to comprehensively develop in science, and in sports, and in cultural work, and build his career. The main parameters that future employers evaluate are knowledge, skills and motivation, and it is these that need to be “pumped” during their studies. Some people think that the academic knowledge obtained in an educational institution will not be needed, but this is not the case. Practice always requires theory. And a high academic rating of a student is an indicator not only of intellectual abilities, but also of organization, discipline, diligence and ambition. And if we take today almost all credit and financial institutions, banks, investment companies, the Southern Main Directorate of the Bank of Russia, the Ministry of Finance of the Stavropol Territory, the Federal Tax Service of Russia in the Stavropol Territory - in many organizations of the Stavropol Territory, every second employee is a graduate of an agricultural university.

I am grateful to the university and my teachers of the economic school of the agricultural university, which allowed me to expand my professional knowledge, get the first pedagogical skills. After that, I studied for a doctorate in Moscow, defended my doctoral dissertation in the dissertation council chaired by the outstanding scientist economist, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Abalkin Leonid Ivanovich.

– What do you like about the teaching profession?

— I love students, their burning lively eyes. I like to see that they are ready to change, absorb information, win, representing our university at olympiads and competitions. It brings great satisfaction when, after the lesson, students come up and thank for the lecture, they say that it was very interesting. Or, when I meet a successful graduate who recently graduated from the university and is already the head of a department, or a former student who graduated 10 years ago and is already the head of a bank, I hear about their success, I hear words of gratitude addressed to the university - I understand that this is the profession that allows us to shape the potential of our economy. Thanks to our graduates that they always treat our university and faculty with gratitude, respect and love, bring their children to study here. I always say that the Agrarian University is a big friendly family, and we give our students an impetus for the development of the economy of the region and Russia.

Is there anything in the teaching profession that you don't like?

— No, there is no such thing.

– Have you experienced professional failures?

“Maybe I’ve been lucky never to encounter such failures. Ever since high school, I have had an excellent student syndrome, then I achieved great success in my studies, and when I came to work at the university, professional victories appeared. There are no failures, there are only certain growth points that I outline so that I can improve and move forward. For our faculty, such a big breakthrough moment was the fact that since 2014, together with the Ministry of Finance of the Stavropol Territory, the Ministry of Finance of Russia, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, we have become one of the pilot strategic partners in the implementation of the national strategy for the development of financial literacy. We stood at the origins of the project, and then the Central Bank began to implement the national strategy for financial inclusion. As a result, educational programs were changed. Our department now teaches financial disciplines at all faculties, as it is necessary for specialists in any field from economists to engineers.

Did everything work out? Of course not. I had to learn to be more tolerant, understanding, communicative, to reconsider the style of interaction and communication, the structural composition of the design of educational and extracurricular activities; gradually introduce new educational technologies, use active teaching methods, etc. Experience helped to develop a certain system of work on each course.

– What are you professionally proud of?

I am proud that our faculty annually implements a huge number of educational projects on financial literacy, the Farmer's School with Rosselkhozbank JSC, projects with the Ministry of Finance of the Stavropol Territory, the Electronic Village project with PJSC Sberbank of Russia, with the Central Bank of Russia, in including a remote course for the agricultural sector of the economy - these are projects of an all-Russian scale. We have also developed a number of master classes to improve financial literacy for different categories: social protection centers, schoolchildren, technical school students. A few years ago, we launched a Master's program in Corporate and Banking Management. It was graduated by 33 graduates who were already heads of regional divisions of banks at that time, and today they are specialists who work throughout Russia. Our graduates occupy key positions in all corners of Russia: Khabarovsk, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Krasnodar, in the South of Russia and in the Stavropol Territory. Education knows no boundaries, age, if a person strives to develop and be successful, then he will definitely receive knowledge throughout his life, explore new spaces of his opportunities.

The work of the faculty with strategic partners is also a pride. It is important that the educational process is not divorced from production. Students, starting from the first year, have the opportunity, in addition to the main classes, to study remotely at the Sber Corporate University and at PJSC CB Center-Invest. In just 2-3 hours, the guys can go through various internships and choose the direction in which they can build a career. When students start internships from the first year, they have the opportunity to visit several production sites. These can be agricultural producers, the elite financial sector, security services, the Southern Main Directorate of the Bank of Russia, the Ministry of Finance of the Stavropol Territory, the Federal Tax Service of Russia for the Stavropol Territory. We take the vector of transformation of educational programs on the challenges of digitalization, talk about how technologies will develop, what skills and knowledge will be in demand on the labor market in the next decade.

Most of the students of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance are members of various scientific circles, where they take prizes under my leadership. For example, the All-Russian competition of the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia for the best scientific work among students, graduate students and young scientists in the nomination "Management", the Open International Scientific and Intellectual Competition of Joint University Works "Dialogue of Generations-2023", the XV International Scientific and Practical Conference "Student Scientific Research" , Interregional Student Olympiad on Taxes and Taxation for Students of Higher Educational Institutions, All-Russian Research Competition "Scientific Achievements of Russian Students", XII International Research Competition "Competition of the Best Student Works", etc.

Also, for more than 10 years, Stavropol Agrarian University has been the final venue for the All-Russian Olympiad "Finathlon for High School Students". This year 172 people took part, and last year - 210 schoolchildren from all over the South of Russia. And the guys who remember me from the Olympiad come to the first year to study. I am very happy when students come who are already interested and involved in the study of the financial sector, and it is always interesting to work with smart people.

– Have the students changed in any way since you started teaching?

“Today, young people are more technologically advanced, creative, striving to gain new knowledge from different areas of the economy, think critically, they can adapt to endless changes, quickly assimilate new information. Therefore, a modern university is not a place for studying individual disciplines, but a territory of opportunities, collaborations and professional growth. Today, thanks to the well-coordinated work of the entire SSAU team, we have such an opportunity. Students already in the first year have the discipline "Financial Literacy".It includes banking, and the securities market, and investments, and the ability to work with financial instruments, and building a personal financial plan, taxes, insurance, pensions and financial fraud issues. There are also disciplines that help children decide on their future profession, for example, "Money, credit, banks", "Banking".

All our students know which graduate will be in demand in the labor market. In addition to the so-called "hard skills" - their professional skills, now it is necessary to develop "soft skills": team building, the ability to work with information, creativity, project work skills, the ability to evaluate information, choose the right one from a large amount of information. In the digital economy, it is necessary to have competencies such as problem solving, result management, innovation, emotional intelligence, digital analysis technologies, risk hedging. Harvard University research shows that Soft skills and digital are 85% of success. Today, our students must also have digital competencies: be able to work not just in Excel, but in professional simulators and programs. Within the framework of digital accessibility, each teacher should not only help, but work together with students.

Students are now very intellectual, and in different areas. For example, when the topic of the lesson is related to financial security or monetary instruments, they say: let's do something from the field of English. It would seem that my finances, management and banking are connected with the English language, but if students want to study, the teacher should meet them. There were questions in the field of financial terminology and the English language: target from English means goal. I asked the students, “What is the name of the inflation targeting tool?” And they answered me - inflation targeting. Children are different now, so there should be another teacher in the classroom.

– How do you think. What should a teacher do to have a positive impact on students?

I have always believed that it is better to lead by example. We must positively influence students and form a professional who will receive a set of competencies that are in demand on the labor market. We must understand that they will graduate from the university professionally charged and pumped - this is the main direction of work.

Our graduates are the honor and pride of the faculty! It is gratifying that they represent the financial elite of the region and the country. Our Faculty of Accounting and Finance, Department of Financial Management and Banking will continue to maintain leading positions, confidently conquering professional heights. Today, our students are talented, creative and purposeful leaders who will multiply the wonderful traditions of their native alma mater.

Last month, we spoke with Dmitry Alexandrovich Chernov, a teacher of Russian language and literature at the Faculty of Secondary Vocational Education. How do films help students learn? Why is it important to move away from the usual patterns? How to use information technology in teaching the humanities? - read in an interview with Dmitry Alexandrovich.
