The new research platform will allow scientists to conduct a whole range of research in the field of genetics that fully meets international standards.
One of the key areas of the laboratory's work will be the creation of genetic passports (DNA profiles) of farm animals, especially breeding stock. Thanks to modern analytical equipment, researchers at Stavropol Agrarian University will be able to accurately determine the degree of relationship between animals using the method of comparing 16 DNA sections and subsequent analysis of the data obtained (comparison of the length and sequences of chains) at the molecular level.
— Molecular genetic expertise is a generally recognized mechanism for controlling purebred breeding. With its help, it is possible to identify unique inimitable parts of the genome, information from which identifies animals as accurately as possible: confirms their relationship, belonging to a specific breeding animal, as well as the reliability of origin, - emphasized Sergey Oleinik, Professor of the Basic Department of Private Animal Science, Selection and Breeding of Animals, SSAU.
Also, scientists of Stavropol State Agrarian University will use a molecular genetic laboratory to assess the genetic well-being of cattle - to identify highly productive animals without genetic abnormalities to breed healthy offspring. Work with genomic selection should help improve the parameters of raw milk (protein and fat content) and increase the average milk yield per head.
“Special attention of scientists of our university is aimed at unlocking the genetic potential of dairy herds. At the same time, today not only high milk yields and weight gain are important to us, but also the productive longevity of animals, the strengthening of organisms through selection work. And Stavropol Agrarian University rightfully becomes the flagship in this area of work. With the opening of the Laboratory of Molecular Genetic Expertise, we are reaching the world level of competence in the field of animal genetics,” said Vladimir Sitnikov, Acting Rector of SSAU.
The Laboratory of Molecular Genetic Expertise of SSAU has already received the status of an object of breeding business - the corresponding order was signed by the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia. Thanks to this, university researchers can conduct genetic research in all breeding farms of the country.
The creation of a laboratory for molecular genetic expertise on the basis of the biotechnological faculty of the university became possible thanks to participation in the federal program "Priority 2030".
