The first in Russia

Siberia has never hosted a sport event of such a scale. For Krasnoyarsk, hosting the Universiade is an honour, a responsibility and a unique chance to show its Siberian spirit and hospitality to the whole world.

We will deliver the Games that the world has never seen. In the centre of Russia, participants and guests of the Winter Universiade 2019 will take part in an exciting festival of sport to discover such a far-away, mysterious Siberia in its winter splendour.

1.5 billion spectators

Over 3 050 sports delegates from more than 50 countries will take part in the Winter Universiade 2019. They will compete for 76 sets of medals in 11 sports. Around 110 000 people are expected to attend the Games. Over 15 000 people will be involved in the Winter Universiade 2019 volunteers movement. A total of 1.5 billion TV viewers all over the globe will follow the competitions in Krasnoyarsk. Over 1 000 journalists will come to Krasnoyarsk to cover the Games in mass media.

Carrying the Torch Relay is one of the long-standing traditions of major international competitions. The relay race of the main symbol of the XXIX World Winter Universiade united millions of citizens from different countries. The fire, has passed a huge way from Italy to China, from Kazakhstan to Russia, today, October 12, 2018, arrives in Stavropol. In total, in our country, 17 cities had the honor of meeting the Universiade Fire. The federal stage of the relay has already passed Moscow, Kaliningrad, Simferopol, Rostov-on-Don. The Fire of the Universiade arriving from Rostov land will be deposited within the walls of the sports and recreation complex of the Stavropol State Agrarian University.

This bright entertainment project is designed to popularize sports around the world. The fire of the Universiade symbolizes the unity and friendship of students from all over the world who dream of living in peace.

The torch relay of the World Winter Universiade-2019, which will be held in Krasnoyarsk next March, started on September 20. The route of the federal stage included 17 major cities of Russia. The relay race will end on March 1, 2019 in Krasnoyarsk.

Stavropol State Agrarian University had the honor of becoming the starting point of the city relay. 11 representatives of the university were among the torchbearers of the Universiade, among them outstanding athletes and public figures: Andrei Ivanovich Chemerkin - Senior Lecturer of the Department of Physical Education and Sports of the SSAU, Honored Master of Sports of Russia in weightlifting, Olympic champion; Evgeny Vladimirovich Kuznetsov - graduate of the SSAU, Honored Master of Sports of Russia in diving, World and European Champion, silver medalist of the Olympic Games in London; Nina Vyacheslavovna Mukhortova - Senior Lecturer of the Department of Physical Education and Sports of the SSAU, Master of Sports of International Class Powerlifting, Master of Sports international class bodybuilding IFBB, Elite of Russia; Nikolay Petrovich Golovin - chairman of the trade union organization of students of the SSAU, chairman of the regional branch of the All-Russian public movement "Association of Students and Student Associations of Russia" in the Stavropol Territory and others.

From the university torchbearers will do the route with a total length of 4.8 km. The final point of the route will be Lenin Square of the regional center. The last fire of the World Winter Universiade will be carried by Vladimir Vladimirovich Vladimirov, the Governor of the Stavropol Territory, and will light the Bowl. 

A solemn ceremony of lighting the Torch of the XXIX World Winter Universiade-2019 took place on the square of Stavropol State Agrarian University and the Torch Relay was launched, which passed along the central streets of the regional capital. The first torchbearer was the senior teacher of the department of physical education and sport of the SSAU, Honored Master of Sports of Russia in weightlifting, Olympic champion Andrei Chemerkin.

The head of Stavropol, Andrey Khasanovich Dzhadtoev, and the Chairman of the City Council, Georgy Kolyagin, addressed the guests and participants of the relay with a welcoming speech.

Professor Ivan Vyacheslavovich Atanov, vice-rector for educational work of Stavropol State Agrarian University, on behalf of the leadership of the university and students expressed gratitude to the organizers of the relay that our city was chosen as the launching pad of such a significant historical event for the city, region and the whole country.

- Ten of the 25 torch-bearers are representatives of the Stavropol State Agrarian University! Teachers and students, champions of Russian and international competitions and prominent public figures: Andrei Chemerkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nina Mukhortova, Nikolai Golovin, Veronika Serikova, Yulia Kolesnichenko, Semyon Semenov, Tatyana Zadorozhnaya, David Bedzhanyan and Jacob Avdeev. This is a great pride for all of us! - said Ivan Vyacheslavovich.

The relay lasted an hour and a half. During this time, 25 torchbearers carried fire past the Palace of Culture and Sports, St. Andrew’s Church, the Stavropol Drama Theater and the Prozritelev and Prave Museum, where they were joyfully welcomed by the citizens. The total length of the route was 4,830 meters.

The Olympic champion in handball Igor Lavrov completed the relay. He raised the Universiade Torch to the stage on Lenin Square of the regional center and together with the Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Stavropol Territory Irina Kuvaldina and the Deputy Chairman of the Duma of the Stavropol Territory Dmitry Sudavtsov lit the Chalice of Fire.

The Universiade Fire has been traveling since September 20, it was lit in Turin, Italy. After Stavropol, the Universiade symbol will be sent to Grozny. The relay race will end on March 1, 2019 in Krasnoyarsk.
